Norfolk Broads

The River Yare, River Waveney and River Bure converge on Breydon Water before flowing into the sea at Great Yarmouth. In places these rivers swell into wide expanses of water known as 'Broads' which were originally thought to be natural lakes but in fact are as a result of peat cutting which was a valuable source of energy due to the lack of wood in the region and when the sea levels rose in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries the pits flooded and created the Norfolk Broads.

The Broads are now one of the most important wetlands in Europe a haven for wildlife such as warblers, kingfishers and grebes also Norfolk’s largest tourist attraction, it was granted National Park status in 1988 and the Broads Authority oversee the clean up of the waters and protect the ecosystem.

The area is criss crossed by roads and railway lines but the only way to see the Broads is by boat there are over 125 miles of waterways with no locks to negotiate and lots of boat rental companies offering a variety of different craft. You can visit the churches, pubs and windmills that proliferate along the Broads for weekly and short term rentals or you can take one of the short excursions on wildlife trips and visiting local landmarks offered at several locations.

Cyclists and walkers are well catered for with a network of footpaths and cycle trails and bike rental points throughout the region. The 56 mile Weavers Way is a long distance footpath that runs from Cromer to Great Yarmouth taking in the best parts of the Broads along the way and there are many shorter walks available.

The Broads also provide great opportunity for the angler where bream, tench, rudd and perch can be found, there are many places to fish from the bank or by hiring a boat out for the day all that’s needed is a current course fishing licence.
